One dead, six injured in stabbing attack at Canadian library

Six people taken to hospital after multiple stabbings in North Vancouver

A woman is dead and six others injured following an attack on Saturday that police said they were trying to determine a motive for. Police said their injuries vary in severity and all six are expected to survive.

Six people were taken to hospitals, according to an emergency health services spokeswoman, who declined to release details on their conditions.

Darren Hailes said he had just finished a run with some friends and they were standing on a patio just outside the Lynn Valley library, unaware of the attacks.

He said people brought tea towels and other supplies, including a first aid kit, to the library.

He added, "I saw people receiving first aid from paramedics next to a vehicle and also next to a restaurant, before they were taken on stretchers".

"It was quite sad, especially because apparently one of them was a child", he said, adding that his father was at the library just 30 minutes before the attack.

'I was in the library community room and just outside, suddenly, we hear yelling and everyone stopped and stared, everyone started running out the side door, ' witness Mary Craver told Global News. "They immediately, of course, went to triage all of the different victims".

Hailes said he later talked to a man who tried to lure the attacker away from other people around the library.

A lone suspect was arrested and there was no ongoing threat to the public, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said in a tweet.

NSW Health is contacting more than 20,000 travellers who have arrived in the state from Queensland between March 20 and 26. However, she cautioned, the situation could change and another lockdown could be on the cards if things go wrong.

Sgt. Frank Jang of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team told a news conference on Saturday that a man in custody had interactions with police in the past and has a criminal record, he said.

Yannick Bandaogo, who was arrested at the scene, is accused of carrying out the attack at the Lynn Valley library in which one woman in her late 20s died. He said they thought she'd been in a auto accident, but she told them she'd just been stabbed by a man. They then saw several victims within about 100 meters (yards) of each other, he said.

"There was a man, there was an older woman, there was a younger woman, a mom".

The attack wreaked havoc on a busy shopping area of North Vancouver early Saturday afternoon, where Jang said families had flocked to enjoy the last weekend before the end of spring break.

The incident took place outside the Lynn Valley Library, with police reportedly responding to reports of a stabbing "just after 1:45 p.m".

On Twitter, Canadian Public Safety Minister Bill Blair expressed shock and sadness over the incident, calling it a 'senseless act of violence'.

In addition, investigators have been continuing to process information from the scene, taking witness statements, and canvassing the area.

"Everything little thing is important on this one". We believe we know the how, the what, the where and the when.
