England adds four more countries to Covid travel ban list

Pakistan, Bangladesh added to UK Covid travel ban list

The Department for Transport said Friday that the number of countries on its "red list" will reach 39 when the latest restrictions take effect in England beginning April 9.

The British High Commission in Nairobi said travelers who have been in or transited through Kenya in the past 10 days will not be granted entry into the UK.

The British government on Friday said the Philippines was included in the "red list" alongside Pakistan, Kenya, and Bangladesh.

The tougher border measures will likely spark a scramble from residents in these countries to get back before they come into force at 4am on April 9. The U.K. has now given a first vaccine shot to over 31 million people - 46 per cent of its population - much more than the European Union average of 5.6 per cent of the population.

Travel bans are meant to reduce the risk from new coronavirus variants like the South Africa strain, the Department for Transport (DfT) said.

More than 5,200 cases were recorded in Pakistan yesterday, and the third spike is being driven by the highly-transmissible variant first detected in Kent.

France heads back into lockdown amid surge of Covid-19 cases
Macron defended his decision not to lock the country down then, saying people had benefitted from "precious weeks of liberty". The president said non-essential shops would remain shut, along businesses such as cafes, bars, and restaurants.

The U.K. transport department said the majority of cases of the South African variant detected in England so far were linked to worldwide travel and that very few are thought to have come from Europe.

Countries already on the list are; Angola, Argentina, Bolivia, Botswana, Brazil, Burundi, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia.

However, British and Irish citizens and those with residence rights (including long-term visa holders) in the United Kingdom will be allowed to enter but they will have to arrive at a designated port and then adhere to the United Kingdom government's hotel quarantine rules for 10 days.

According to Johns Hopkins University, so far 4,364,547 COVID-19 cases, and 127,006 deaths have been reported in the UK.

He added that the travellers would have to pay to stay in mandatory hotel quarantine for 10 days after arrival in the UK.

These four nations would join about three dozen other nations mainly from Africa, the Middle East and South America in the "red list".
