Northern Ireland to face cold weather and possibly snow

The good weather is set to be replaced by cloud and cold

Ireland is set for a balmy opening to the Easter weekend but an Arctic weather front will bring cooler conditions and rain showers from Sunday.

There will be some mist patches for a time this morning (Friday, April 2).

FRIDAY NIGHT: Continuing dry with clear spells. Highest temperatures of 11 to 13 degrees with mostly light east to northeast breezes.

"From Saturday evening, patches of mist and fog will develop - hinting at the unsettled conditions on the horizon". Lowest temperatures of 0 to 4 degrees.

There's set to be more of the same on Easter Monday, cold and breezy with sunny spells and scattered wintry showers mainly over the northern half of the country. Frost will develop as temperatures fall to between -2° and +2°. Rain will develop in the northwest later in the morning and will extend across the northern half of the country during the afternoon and possibly further south into the evening.

Smugglers drop 2 children over USA border wall
Last month, almost 9,500 unaccompanied children arrived at the U.S. -Mexico border, a record high for any February in history. The tent complex held more than 4,100 migrants, including 3,200 unaccompanied children, a border patrol official said.

While this week has seen glorious highs of 18 degrees in Dublin and the surrounding Leinster area, the south west of the country could see temperatures soar to as high as 19 degrees later today. Some wintry showers may develop overnight on north-facing coasts.

It's not unusual to see big swings in temperature across the United Kingdom in spring, however there will be a notable change in temperature as the warm air across the south is displaced.

The end of the bank holiday weekend will herald colder weather, however, with the Met Office forecasting bands of cold Arctic air moving across the United Kingdom from the north west by Sunday, bringing snow showers and freezing overnight temperatures. This is particularly true from late Sunday and into early next week when the character of the weather is likely to change with the prospect of snow showers for many accompanied by very strong northerly winds.

Tuesday (April 6) will continue cold with sunny spells and scattered showers, some wintry. Afternoon temperatures will only reach around 3 to 7 degrees and there will be an added wind chill in fresh and gusty northwesterly winds.
