Taiwan train derails; at least 36 dead, many injured

At least 36 dead after train derails in Taiwan

The transport ministry put the death toll in the island's worst rail disaster in more than three decades at 36.

Another live broadcast by UDN outside the tunnel showed at least two undamaged train carriages with rescuers helping passengers escape.

The train was carrying around 350 people, and rescue efforts are ongoing, the department said.

Taiwan's Transport and Communications Minister Lin Xia-lung said on Twitter that he was on his way to the crash site.

The statement said 72 people were still trapped inside train carriages while 61 passengers had been sent to hospital.

It is believed to have hit a truck that was "not parked properly" and is suspected to have slid onto the train tracks, the official Central News Agency said.

"Is everyone out in carriage four?" a woman is heard shouting from inside the tunnel, in videos provided by the fire department.

Country reveals shocking truth about its coronavirus death toll
The higher toll would rival that of Brazil, which now has the world's second-highest number of deaths after the United States. During a spike in cases during January, more 200 deaths a day linked to the virus were recorded in the capital.

Local media pictures from the scene showed the back of a yellow flatbed truck on its side next to the train.

The front part of the train was situated outside the tunnel, and those in carriages still in the tunnel were being led to safety, Taiwan's railway administration said.

Taiwan's mountainous east coast is a popular tourist destination, and the railway line from Taipei down the east coast is renowned for its tunnels and route that hugs the coast just north of Hualien where the crash occurred.

The accident came on the first day of the four-day Tomb Sweeping Festival.

The accident occurred on Taiwan's eastern railway line around 9:30 am (0130 GMT) near the coastal city of Hualien.

In 2018, a passenger train with 366 passengers on board derailed in Taiwan's Yilan County, claiming 18 lives and wounding over 160.

At least 34 people have died and dozens have been injured in a train crash in Taiwan.
