U.S. 'open' to Iran's suggestion of 'wider nuclear deal roadmap'

Washington repeats claims on Iran sanctions

The United States said Wednesday that it has a shared interest with Beijing in curbing Iran's nuclear program, declining to fan the flames over a 25-year cooperation pact signed by the frequent USA nemeses.

In 2018, then President Donald Trump unilaterally withdrew the USA from the deal, which is aimed at reining in Iran's nuclear program.

Iranian media reported that Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi had confirmed Tehran's participation in Tuesday's meeting in Vienna.

There was "no need for any negotiations on America's return to the JCPOA", he added, referring to the nuclear agreement.

US officials will also be in Vienna for consultations but so far are not expected to be part of the larger meeting.

China, France, Germany, Russia and the United Kingdom signed the original agreement with Iran and the U.S.

Saeed Khatibzadeh, an Iranian foreign ministry spokesman, said the agreement was a "roadmap" for trade, economic, and transportation cooperation, with a "special focus on the private sectors of the two sides".

The State Department also confirmed Thursday that the USA had granted Iraq an extension to a sanctions waiver allowing it to import Iranian gas.

Smugglers drop 2 children over USA border wall
Last month, almost 9,500 unaccompanied children arrived at the U.S. -Mexico border, a record high for any February in history. The tent complex held more than 4,100 migrants, including 3,200 unaccompanied children, a border patrol official said.

The commission will meet relevant experts to "to clearly identify sanctions lifting and nuclear implementation measures". According to him, one group of representatives will be dealing with the issues of lifting sanctions, while the other will be working on the practical steps to resolve nuclear issues pertaining to JCPOA compliance.

The body that oversees the implementation of the JCPOA has been under threat since then-US president Donald Trump pulled out in 2018 and Iran began to resume nuclear activities it had scaled back.

Price said China and the United States had common interests "as we look to ways to find that mutual return to compliance with the JCPOA".

Any return of the United States would involve complications.

Trump trashed the deal but Biden has hoped to revive it, although he insists Iran must return to full compliance before he ends Trump's sanctions.

Under that temporary agreement, Iran will no longer share surveillance footage of its nuclear facilities with the IAEA but it has promised to preserve the tapes for three months.

Otherwise, Iran has vowed to erase the tapes, narrowing the window for a diplomatic breakthrough.
