Australia investigates possible link of blood clot case to AstraZeneca vaccine

Green light for AstraZeneca vaccine supplied through Covax

Canadian officials are expecting a shipment of vaccines from the COVAX facility next week, Paquette said, although, adding that the World Health Organization co-led initiative does not provide a delivery schedule.

As per the terms of a contract signed in February, Canada is set to receive an additional 1.5 million vaccine doses from the company by mid-May, in addition to the 500,000 doses received last month as reported by Sputnik. That followed reports of 31 cases of the rare clots, mostly in women.

"This condition has presented as either a clot appearing in the brain or as thrombosis in other sites, including in the intra-abdominal venous systems", he said.

In a statement on Friday, the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation said, "There is not a higher overall rate of relatively common types of blood clots (.) reported after COVID-19 vaccination". The vaccine received conditional approval on March 2.

The Medicines Regulatory Authority said that vaccination is the most effective way to reduce the number of deaths and severe symptoms caused by the coronavirus.

The committee is expected to come with further information about the AstraZeneca vaccine.

Taiwan train derails; at least 36 dead, many injured
The statement said 72 people were still trapped inside train carriages while 61 passengers had been sent to hospital. The accident occurred on Taiwan's eastern railway line around 9:30 am (0130 GMT) near the coastal city of Hualien.

European and United Kingdom medical regulators are yet to establish a causal link with rare instances of blood clotting disorders and the AstraZeneca jab.

He said people should be particularly alert to severe and persistent headaches that occu between four and 20 days after the vaccination, which "are different to your usual pattern of headaches" and do not settle with paracetomol or other over-the-counter painkillers. Prior to that, the agency disclosed five cases on March 18, out of 11 million shots.

In an updated recommendation on its website, STIKO said there was no scientific evidence on the safety of a mixed series of vaccines.

A 44-year-old man was admitted to a Melbourne hospital with clotting days after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine, suffering serious thrombosis and a low count of platelets, or blood cells that stop bleeding.

In early March, the Government announced it had secured an extra 8.5 million doses of Pfizer's Covid vaccine, bringing the total number of doses to 10m - enough for every New Zealander.
