Australia working with EU, UK on AstraZeneca blood clot case

Australia investigates possible link of blood clot case to vaccine

Despite the cases, the MHRA has said the benefits of the vaccine in preventing COVID-19 outweigh any risks and urged the public to continue coming forward for the jab.

The British-Swedish company has been plagued by several issues, including a row over vaccine deliveries with the European Union as the continent battles with rising infections and reports of blood clotting after people received the shot.

The Netherlands on Friday became the latest in a line of European countries to halt vaccinations with the AstraZeneca jab for people under the age of 60 amid fears of links to rare blood clots.

"The risk of having this specific type of blood clot is very small", the agency noted.

All the cases occurred between seven and 10 days after the vaccinations and all the people affected were women aged between 25 and 65 years.

But, he said, "The key thing to remember is how rare these brain clots are, and how powerful the proven benefit of vaccination is against COVID".

Return to nuclear deal
The ultimate goal of the deal is to prevent Iran from developing a nuclear bomb, something it insists it doesn't want to do. Tehran has said that it would resume its own compliance with the JCPOA once the lifting of sanctions has been verified.

In Australia, The Therapeutic Goods Administration is investigating what's thought to be the first Australian vaccine recipient affected by the "extremely rare" blood clotting disorder detected in a few dozen people who received the Anglo-Swedish drug maker's jab.

Speaking to Reuters, the government's chief medical adviser said United States authorities had secured enough coronavirus inoculations to immunise the entire population and possibly administer booster shots in the autumn.

"But given how consistent the clinical features are in this case, with some similar cases which have been seen overseas, it is likely that this case reported is related to the vaccine".

At least 2 839 849 people have died of Covid-19 around the world since the outbreak emerged in China in December 2019, according to an AFP tally from official sources at 13:00 GMT Saturday. "This is a safe and effective vaccine", Emer Cooke, the EMA's executive director, told reporters last month.

The clotting cases have generated concern because, scientists said, they were somewhat unusual.

Britain has relied heavily on the AstraZeneca vaccine, which was developed at the University of Oxford, and the government has insisted that the shot is safe.
