The CDC released its long-awaited travel guidance on Friday amid the accelerating pace of vaccinations in the USA, even as more contagious variants threaten to ignite a new wave of Covid-19 cases and as millions of Americans hit the skies anyhow.
"By working closely with national and global health authorities and using our scale to reach people quickly", the blog said, "we're doing our part to help people get credible information, get vaccinated, and encourage others to do the same so we can come back together safely".
But worldwide travelers headed to the United States should have a negative Covid-19 test before they get on the plane, be tested after arrival, and must quarantine if local authorities in the United States require it, the CDC said in a statement.
The head of the CDC held out the promise of travel in asking people to get vaccinated when they can.
And, during Friday's White House briefing, CDC Director Rochelle Walensky, MD, MPH, said it would be better if vaccinated people stayed home.
All people, even if vaccinated, should still wear masks on planes, the CDC said.
Veteran HK activists convicted over 2019 pro-democracy protest
The decision comes shortly after top Chinese lawmakers approved a sweeping plan that effectively ends open elections in Hong Kong. Authorities have since unleashed a broad crackdown and Beijing has imposed a new security law which criminalises much dissent.
The CDC previously released guidance for what vaccinated people can do. It also said vaccinated people could visit with unvaccinated people from a single household under similar conditions, as long as the unvaccinated individuals were at low risk for severe illness if infected. However, it urged vaccinated Americans to keep wearing masks in public and to avoid crowds.
Some travel guidance remains unchanged. CDC discourages non-essential domestic travel by those who are not fully vaccinated. CDC still recommends fully vaccinated people have proof of a negative COVID-19 test prior to returning to the US, and get tested 3-5 days later.
Domestic travelers who are fully vaccinated - meaning two weeks have passed since their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna shot or their one and only Johnson & Johnson shot - do not need to self-quarantine upon arriving at their destination and "do not need to get tested before or after travel unless their destination requires it", according to the CDC.
Unvaccinated people are still advised to avoid unnecessary travel.
Covid-19 cases have started rising again in the USA, with 79,000 new cases recorded on Thursday. The virus is spreading more rapidly in many places.
