Two US Capitol police officers injured after suspect rams vehicle into barrier

SC lawmakers officials react to deadly Capitol attack

Pittman said the suspect did not appear to have been on the police's radar. "At least one officer, drew their weapon and shot the suspect".

While there was no immediate connection apparent between January 6 and Friday's crash, the incident underscores that the building and campus remain potential targets for violence.

Robert Contee, chief of the DC police department, told a news conference later that there was no longer an ongoing threat and the attack was not believed to be related to terrorism.

"Please keep the Capitol Police and first responders in your prayers as we try to understand the situation unfolding at the Capitol right now", Rep. Peter Meijer (R-Mich.) tweeted.

Police closed several blocks of Constitution Avenue, the main boulevard running along the north side of the US Capitol building.

After ramming the barricade, the driver reportedly exited the vehicle with a knife, stabbed one of the officers, and was shot by Capitol police. One of the officers who was injured was taken by police vehicle to the hospital; the other was being transported by emergency medical crews, the officials said.

One Capitol Police officer died as a result of the attack, as well as four others individuals who took part or were nearby.

Authorities have begun only in the past couple of weeks to remove the outer ring of high, razor-wire-topped fencing erected around the sprawling Capitol complex after the January 6 rampage.

But the danger on Friday was limited as Congress was in recess for the Easter holiday and relatively few people were in the building.

U.S. Capitol Police officers stand near a vehicle that crashed into a barrier on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C., Friday.

Video emerging from the scene showed police and emergency response vehicles responding.

Earlier, a message played over the loudspeakers inside the Capitol said that all buildings were being locked down "due to an external security threat" and staff members were told they could not enter or exit the buildings.

President Biden was in Camp David, Md., when the incident took place, according to the White House.

In recent weeks, some security has been loosened, with the number of armed National Guard troops at the Capitol reduced and a security fence that created a broad perimeter around the Capitol complex removed. As customary, he was traveling with a member of the National Security Council Staff who was expected to brief him on the incident.
