According to reports from Fox News and NBC, the suspect was shot after he rammed police and exited the auto wielding a knife.
"Just after 1pm, a man in a blue sedan rammed his vehicle into the North Barricade at the U.S. Capitol, striking 2 USCP officers".
"Whether the attack was at law enforcement, or whoever, we have a responsibility to get to the bottom of it and we'll do that", Robert Contee, the acting chief of Washington DC's Metropolitan Police Department, said at a news conference on Friday. Law enforcement sources tell ABC News the suspect is dead.
The attack took place close to where armed insurrectionists stormed the complex housing the US Congress on January 6.
Both officers were also taken to hospital, where one also died.
But the danger on Friday was limited as Congress was in recess for the Easter holiday and relatively few people were in the building. He said the area was "swarming with police officers".
The officials initially said the suspect was being taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Fencing that prevented vehicular traffic near that area was recently removed as the Capitol has started to open up after the January 6 riots.

The US Capitol Police said the investigation into today's attack on police officers near the US Capitol is ongoing.
Less than three months after New Jersey lawmakers fled a mob of Donald Trump supporters, they watched from afar as another violent incident erupted on the U.S. Capitol grounds on Good Friday and another police officer died.
Staffers on the Hill were sent a message from U.S. Capitol Police around 1:20 p.m. ET saying "due to an external security threat" that "no entry or exit is permitted".
The security checkpoint is typically used by senators and staff on weekdays.
Streets surrounding the US Capitol and congressional office buildings were locked down, with dozens of police cars - marked and unmarked - raced toward America's legislative seat.
The National Guard mobilized under the presumption that an attack could be ongoing. And if they were outside, they were told to "seek cover".
President Joe Biden left Washington earlier in the day for Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.
