The suspect - who has since been pronounced dead - entered the North barricade of the Capitol just after 1 p.m. ET, ramming his auto into two officers and then crashing into a barrier, Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said at a briefing. Afterwards, police say the suspect exited the vehicle with a knife in hand and appeared to lunge towards the officers.
In a press conference a few minutes later, authorities announced one of the officers had since died.
The officials could not discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

At about 1 p.m EST, today, April 2, an incident at the North Barricade of the United States Capitol, along Independence Avenue occurred. It comes as the Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win. It is unclear if the shots were fired by law enforcement or suspects at this time.

Acting Metropolitan Police Chief Robert Contee said there wasn't an ongoing threat and the attack didn't appear to be terrorism-related. But the attack underscores that the building and campus - and the officers charged with protecting them - remain potential targets for violence.
All roads leading to the complex were cordoned off as well.
The FBI's Washington, D.C., field office said it had "responded to an incident at the U.S. Capitol" and is providing support to Capitol Police.
Nearly 140 Capitol Police officers were wounded then, including officers not issued helmets who sustained head injuries and one officer with cracked ribs, according to the officers' union.
President Joe Biden, who is spending the weekend at Camp David, was briefed on the incident, the White House said. "On behalf of the entire House, we are profoundly grateful".
The U.S. Capitol remained on lockdown Friday afternoon after a auto rammed a barricade outside the Senate, though the building was largely empty due to a two-week recess. Video showed National Guard troops mobilising near the area of the crash.
Video posted online showed a dark-coloured sedan crashed against a vehicle barrier and a police dog inspecting the vehicle.
But CBS News reported that security officials had already warned congressional staffers of a threat before the vehicle ramming.
