"I need to reiterate that at this time the risk of serious disease and death from Covid-19, if we experience a severe outbreak, especially among older Australians and those with serious health conditions, is far greater than the very small potential risk of a very rare clotting disorder associated with the vaccine", Kidd said.
The government has no plans to postpone the administering of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine, despite reports of its side effects on recipients overseas, said Deputy Health Minister Datuk Dr Noor Azmi Ghazali.
"The benefits in preventing a COVID-19 infection and its complications continue to outweigh any risks and the public should continue to get their vaccine when invited to do so", June Raine, MHRA chief executive, told United Kingdom broadcaster the BBC.
The reports represented 25 more cases than Britain's medicines regulator had previously received, going some way toward addressing a mystery that has hung over safety concerns about the vaccine: why Britain had not observed the same phenomenon that has been seen in continental Europe, driving countries including France, Germany and Sweden to stop giving the shot to younger people, who are believed to be at higher risk from the rare clotting events.
In Australia, the ABC reports a 44-year-old man was admitted to hospital in Victoria with blood clots, several days after receiving the AstraZeneca vaccine.
The Netherlands has temporarily halted the use of the AstraZeneca Covid-19 vaccine for people under the age of 60, the Ministry of Health, Welfare and Sport.
The European Medicines Agency is expected to update its recommendation on this issue on April 7.
CDC Says Fully Vaccinated People Can Travel
The head of the CDC held out the promise of travel in asking people to get vaccinated when they can. Covid-19 cases have started rising again in the USA , with 79,000 new cases recorded on Thursday.
Both the EMA and the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) recommended that the use of the vaccine in Ireland should continue after a conclusion by the former that the vaccine is "safe and effective" following fears last month.
The vaccine was developed with the University of Oxford in Britain. Benefits of vaccination against Covid-19 continue to outweigh any risks.
Adam Finn, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Bristol, said the "extreme rarity" of the blood-clotting events in the context of the millions of jabs administered in the United Kingdom makes the decision very straightforward.
Germany took a similar decision earlier this week.
"If you look in the general population the estimates are between two and 16 people per million may naturally get this type of blood clot so the association with vaccination may not be related to the vaccine itself".
Figures showed that the United Kingdom has given a first dose of vaccine to 31.4 million people, or around 46 percent of its population, a much higher rate than the rest of Europe.
It has said a causal link between unusual blood clots in people who have had the AstraZeneca vaccine is "not proven, but is possible", and that the benefits of the vaccine outweigh the risks of side effects.
