Media report on suspect in deadly Capitol attack

Members of US Capitol police and national guard walk near the scene after a police officer died Friday

Robert Contee, chief of the DC police department, told a news conference later that there was no longer an ongoing threat and the attack was not believed to be related to terrorism. Some of the messages were captured by the group SITE, which tracks online activity. The attack underscored that the building and campus - and the officers charged with protecting them - remain potential targets for violence. The driver slipped through a gate that had opened to allow traffic in and out of the Capitol and rammed a barrier that had protected the building long before January 6. And the most recent incident could delay the gradual reopening of the building's grounds to the public.

In a statement emailed to Insider, a spokesperson said: "After this horrific event, our thoughts are with the Capitol Police and their loved ones".

During the network's 2 p.m. ET program "Katy Tur Reports", NBC News justice correspondent Pete Williams provided reporting on the then-unidentified suspect, who had just died, Fox News reported.

William Billy Evans joined the department in 2003 and was a member of its first responders unit.

A security review requested by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., in the aftermath of the riot and conducted by a task force recommended eventually replacing the barrier with mobile fencing and "an integrated, retractable fencing system" that could be used as needed.

Biden Releases Statement on Capitol Attack: Jill and I are 'Heartbroken'
Large sections of fencing that secluded much of the surrounding area for months have only begun to come down in recent weeks. In a statement, Pelosi said Congress was ready to assist law enforcement with the investigation into the vehicle attack.

President Joe Biden issued a statement expressing condolences over the death of the police officer. "As we mourn the loss of yet another courageous Capitol Police officer, I have ordered that the White House flags be lowered to half-staff". Miriam Carey's family said she suffered from postpartum depression with psychosis but was not risky. The attack occurred about 100 yards (meters) from the entrance of the building on the Senate side of the Capitol.

It comes as the Washington region remains on edge almost three months after a mob of armed insurrectionists loyal to former President Donald Trump stormed the Capitol as Congress was voting to certify Joe Biden's presidential win.

Both officers were also taken to hospital, where one also died.

The incident came fewer than two weeks after the Capitol Police removed an outer fence that had cut off a wide swath of the area off completely from vehicular and police traffic, an effort to secure the complex after thousands of former President Donald Trump's supporters marched on the building January 6 and around 800 of them broke inside. "It looks awful to have the beacon of our democracy surrounded by razor wire and National Guard troops".
