Taiwan prosecutors probe train crash that killed 51

Taiwan Looking for Truck Driver Who Could Have Caused Train Crash | NOW

India on Saturday condoled the loss of lives in the Taiwan rail accident which took place on Friday, killing 51 people and leaving over 150 people injured.

In the island's worst rail accident in seven decades, 50 people have been confirmed dead after a packed express train carrying nearly 500 passengers and crew slammed into a truck near the eastern city of Hualien on Friday, causing it to derail and the front part to crumple.

Yu Hsiu-duan, head of the Hualien prosecutors office, told reporters late on Friday an arrest warrant had been sought for a construction site manager suspected of having failed to engage the brake properly, and that was now was being handled by the court system.

On Friday, a Taiwan express train was traveling with hundreds of passengers aboard when it derailed in a tunnel just north of the city of Hualien, per Reuters.

The Hualien district court initially allowed Lee to post bail of 500,000 new Taiwan dollars (US$17,516), but that decision was reversed Sunday when a higher court in Hualien rescinded the lower court's decision to allow bail, Taiwan's Central News Agency reported. "I will cooperate with the authorities' investigation fully, and take responsibility". "Finally, I once again express my sincerest apologies".

"Car number eight had the most serious injuries and number of deaths", rescue worker Chang Zi-chen told reporters on Saturday, referring to the most forward passenger auto.

On Saturday, focus shifted to removing carriages now blocking one half of the sole train line down Taiwan's remote and mountainous eastern coastline.

Ontario entering four-week province-wide shutdown effective Saturday
Ontario's science advisers are suggesting a stay-at-home order is needed to control Ontario's third wave of COVID-19. Schools are slated to reopen after the end of this week's postponed spring break, which concludes on April 9.

The railway administration is also without a permanent director after its former chief retired in January.

According to a government-issued casualty list, the youngest person confirmed to have died was a six-year-old girl; the oldest, a 79-year-old man. "I'm so angry", he said.

Rescuers described an appalling scene as they rushed into the tunnel and found the front of the train pulverised into a twisted mesh of metal.

The damaged section of the track will not reopen until April 20 at the earliest, Wang said, though rail traffic continues on a parallel track that runs through another tunnel and was not affected by the accident.

Priest Sung Chih-chiang was there as a show of support... to the survivors.

"She could not find her daughter".

The TRA on Saturday said it would review its ticket policy as 120 passengers had standing tickets when the derailment occurred on the first day of a four-day break for Taiwan's annual tomb-sweeping tradition, which sees many Taiwanese people return home to pay tribute to their ancestors and clean up family tombs. "She put her effort to move those pieces one by one, but her daughter's voice became quieter and quieter, and then there was no response", he said.
