Australia and New Zealand announce travel bubble starts from April

Fox Glacier Guiding chief Rob Jewell told Mike Hosking on Newstalk ZB that pre-Covid Australians made up about 32 per cent of his business

"When it's safe to do so, we look forward to sharing the biggest homecoming party with everyone at Mount Smart Stadium but we need to be absolutely sure we will be able to travel to and from Australia with confidence to ensure our place in the competition isn't jeopardised".

The report comes as New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is scheduled to announce the date for quarantine-free travel with Australia later on Tuesday, after facing mounting pressure from businesses to open the border.

The trans-Tasman travel bubble between Australia and New Zealand will reopen from April 19 as both countries continue to enjoy low coronavirus cases.

The Australian reported this morning that the bubble was expected to begin next Monday, April 12, or the following Monday, April 19, according to the newspaper's federal government and industry sources.

'Those undertaking travel on either side of the ditch will do so under the guidance of flyer beware, ' she said.

Given all Australian states except Western Australia are already open to NZ visitors, this will effectively mark the official opening of the much touted trans-Tasman bubble.

Fox Glacier Guiding chief Rob Jewell told Mike Hosking on Newstalk ZB that pre-Covid, Australians made up about 32 per cent of his business.

Ms Ardern called the bubble a "world-first" arrangement.

Passengers arriving at the worldwide airport in Auckland.

"For this reason, we have suspended the sale of most New Zealand services until 31 October 2021". Returning New Zealand residents would be required to undergo 14 days in hotel quarantine, at their own expense.

Fears that last week's community transmission of COVID-19 in Queensland could push the bubble back, and put the crossover Super Rugby series in jeopardy, proved to be unfounded despite Ardern acknowledging Brisbane's snap three-day lockdown.

"An arrival, passengers will be taken through what we call "the green zones" at the airport meaning there'll be no contact with those arriving from other parts of the world and going into managed isolation or quarantine facilities", Ms Ardern said.
