With the Centre approving vaccination of all citizens above 45 years across the country from April 1, the state government last month had sought an adequate supply of COVID-19 vaccine at the earliest for uninterrupted vaccination drive.
Of the active cases, 318 individuals are now hospitalized with COVID-19, 96 of whom are in intensive care.
Another 23 people have died of the disease since Thursday, said Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry and Health Minister Adrian Dix in a written statement.
"A directive has been issued for these people to be given priority in getting the vaccine in April for us to complete Phase 1", he added.
In their first update in two days, B.C. health officials announced 1,889 new cases of COVID-19.
He said that all samples are being sent to Delhi to test the new variants of Covid-19.
"Now is not the time to bend the rules - it's time for us to work together again to bend the curve", Henry said.
Pfizer Covid-19 vaccine safe, effective on adolescents in trial, companies say
Whether COVID-19 vaccines work and are safe to use on children is one of the big questions drugmakers are trying to answer. Earlier this week, Pfizer/BioNTech had hopeful results from a vaccine trial in children between 12 and 15 years old.
Of the confirmed variant cases to date, 2,771 are of the variant first identified in the United Kingdom, 737 of the variant first identified in Brazil and 51 of the variant first identified in South Africa.
Health officials have pointed to emerging evidence that on top of being easier to spread, B.1.1.7 and P.1 can cause more severe illness, including in younger people. The P1 variant has also hit the Vancouver Canucks, with 21 players and coaches now affected and the team's season likely derailed.
Locations run by the county, health systems and other vaccine providers can inoculate about 35,000 people a day.
As case numbers remain alarmingly high, the province has been ramping up its vaccination efforts. According to the DSHS, 57,291 county residents have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine as of Monday, while 31,252 have been fully vaccinated, approximately 17.04% of eligible adults.
That total includes 806,118 first doses - enough to protect almost 16 per cent of the province's population - and 87,472 second doses.
Khairy said a proposal would also be made to the National Security Council (MKN) to allow interstate travel for people wishing to help dependants in the kampung who are too weak to go to vaccination centres on their own.
The minister said the death rate due to Covid-19 in the state is 0.84 per cent and 96.03 per cent people are going home after recovering. "This is especially important for anyone who has been travelling in these past weeks, as transmission has increased", they said.
