Australia New Zealand Travel Bubble Will Open April 19

Australia and New Zealand to start quarantine-free travel

Ardern described it as a world leading move between New Zealand, with just 26 Covid-19 deaths in a population of five million, and Australia with fewer than 1,000 deaths in a population of 25 million.

The flight comparison website revealed fare prices starting from just $250 for travel in August, with the platform clocking a number of attractive prices on flexible flights.

The travel bubble comes more than a year after New Zealand closed its doors in the face of the coronavirus pandemic and six months after Australia allowed Kiwis to fly into selected states without the need to quarantine.

Hours before the Tuesday announcement, Stuff reported the Air New Zealand website was offering an expanded list of trans-Tasman flights from April 19.

New Zealand has announced Australians can enter the country quarantine-free in two weeks time.

"I can not see or point to any countries in the world that are maintaining a strategy of keeping their countries Covid-free whilst opening up worldwide travel between each other", she said.

"We welcome them back as indeed Kiwis will be welcoming Aussies". "That is, safely opening up global travel to another country while continuing to pursue a strategy of elimination and a commitment to keeping the virus out".

However, just hours before Ardern's announcement, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said it would be at least another month before he could allow holidays overseas.

The Bubble Is Here: You Can Holiday in New Zealand Without Having to Quarantine Anywhere, Starting Next Monday

"Our consumer research suggests Australians are eager to get on an aircraft and start travelling again with nearly 80 per cent of Australians supportive of creating travel bubbles with countries where levels of COVID-19 are low".

This means that Super Rugby teams from both sides of the Tasman will be able to freely travel from one country to the other, allowing a cross-border competition to take place.

"That's why every seat on every Qantas and Jetstar flight for the first three days of the travel bubble opening will be Classic Flight Rewards".

"The Trans-Tasman travel bubble represents a start of a new chapter in our COVID response and recovery, one that people have worked so hard at", Ardern told reporters in the New Zealand capital Wellington. The one-way travel corridor began in October previous year, allowing passengers from New Zealand to arrive in Australia without having to quarantine - but they've still been required to quarantine for 14 days after returning to NZ.

The Australian Airports Association said the long-awaited two-way travel bubble would provide a much-needed boost to the aviation and tourism sectors and help to increase the confidence of potential travellers.

"And if we saw multiple cases of unknown origin, we would likely suspend flights for a set period of time", Ardern said.

She warned Australians would "need to plan for the possibility of travel being disrupted if there is an outbreak".

"In many ways we will treat Australia as a region of our own when we're making decisions on restrictions".
