Fresh Covid case in New Zealand as it prepares travel bubble

New Zealand suspends entry of all Indian passengers from April 11 to 28 amid spike in COVID-19 cases

The ban will come into effect from April 11 and will be in place till April 28, Adern said. The ban will also apply to those who are New Zealand citizens and are now in India for some reason.

New Zealand announced today it had suspended travel from India in response to a surge in Covid cases among travellers to this country.

The suspension is temporary because "we do have obligations to allow citizens to return to New Zealand", Ardern says.

During this time, the prime minister said, her government will look at risk management measures to resume travel between the two countries.

"I want to emphasize that while arrivals of COVID from India has prompted this measure, we are looking at how we manage high risk points of departure generally".

The government had been reviewing its border settings in recent weeks, Ardern said, adding that ultimately New Zealand wanted to see fewer cases arriving in the country.

That discovery escalated the response and prompted the first evacuations and a declaration of a state of emergency on Saturday. A worst-case scenario could see a 20-foot wall of polluted water emerge from the leaking site, the Bradenton Herald reported .

Not a single community transmission was reported locally for about 40 days.

The country also reported 630 Covid-related deaths in the last 24 hours, while the active number of cases stands at 8,43,473, the Union Health Ministry has said.

The PM said she recognised the difficulty the suspension will cause for some citizens attempting to return home.

New Zealand on Thursday also reported one new locally infected case in a worker who was employed at a coronavirus managed isolation facility.

The country's Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield confirmed the man, 24, had not yet been vaccinated and travels to work in a private auto with a colleague.

There are now 95 active Covid-19 cases in New Zealand - the security guard and 94 who were detected at the border - and all are housed in a special quarantine facility.
