USA man shot by Minnesota officer in traffic stop crashes, dies

A police officer in Minnesota fatally shot a motorist on Sunday in the city of Brooklyn Center, about 10 miles from Downtown Minneapolis, where a former police officer is on trial and charged with murdering George Floyd past year, the authorities and witnesses said. Brooklyn Center is a city of about 30,000 people located on the northwest border of Minneapolis.

About 100 people, some visibly upset and one carrying a sign demanding "Justice for George Floyd", confronted police in riot gear after the officer shot a man in his auto in the suburb of Brooklyn Center. Some people pelted police cars with stones and rocks.

According to The Star Tribune, the man has been identified as Daunte Wright.

John Harrington, commissioner of the Minnesota Department of Public Safety, said at a middle-of-the-night news conference that marchers had descended upon the Brooklyn Center police department building after the Sunday afternoon shooting. They determined the driver faced an outstanding warrant. As they tried to arrest him, he got back into the vehicle and an officer fired at him, Brooklyn Center Police Chief Tim Gannon said in a news release. One officer discharged a firearm striking the driver who then travelled several blocks before crashing. He was pronounced dead at the scene. On one street, written in multi-colored chalk: "Justice for Daunte Wright". Numerous protests turned into riots, with violence against police and civilians as well as acts of looting, property damage and arson.

Minnesota's Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is on the scene and will conduct an investigation into the incident, according to Gannon.

Police and medical personnel attempted life-saving measures following the crash, but the man died at the scene, Gannon said.

A woman who lives near the crash scene, Carolyn Hanson, said she saw law enforcement officers pull a man out of a vehicle and perform CPR. Hanson also told ABC that she saw another passenger get out of the vehicle "covered in blood".

A crowd began to gather at the scene later in the day following a rally at St. Paul for families of people killed by police.

Police later ordered the protesters to disperse, with footage showing tear gas and stun grenades being fired by officers.

The incident happened with Minneapolis already on edge and midway through the trial of the first of four police officers in George Floyd's death.

Protests immediately followed Wright's death.

Police say both officers' body cameras were activated during the incident.

"All he did was have an air freshener in the auto and they told him to get out of the vehicle".

Mr Wright's mother, Katie, said her son had called her during the traffic stop for auto insurance details.

Brooklyn Center Mayor Mike Elliott called the shooting "tragic".

Mr. Chauvin was seen on video kneeling on Mr. Floyd's neck, a move that Chief Medaria Arradondo of the Minneapolis Police Department said "absolutely" violated the department's policies during an arrest.

This story is still developing. While some people were yelling at officers and demanding answers, Mr. Wright's family members urged people to be nonviolent.
