The Knoxville Police Department tweeted that authorities were at the site of the shooting at Austin-East Magnet High School in Knoxville, Tennessee, but there was not "active threat".

The officer was shot at least once and taken to the hospital, police said. "He said he'd rather be hurt than anybody else", Knoxville Mayor Indya Kincannon told CBS News. I thanked him for putting his life on the line to protect students and staff at the school.

As details continue to emerge, our thoughts are with Austin East Magnet High School and those school community members who have been affected by the shooting that took place this afternoon.

The injured male police officer is conscious and his injuries are not life-threatening.

The incident, which unfolded at about 3:15 p.m. local time at Austin-East Magnet School on the east side of Knoxville, marked the latest in a rash of shootings across the United States since mid-March. "We are gathering information about this tragic situation and will provide additional information as soon as possible", Knoxville schools superintendent Bob Thomas said on Twitter.

"One male was pronounced deceased at the scene, while another was detained for further investigation", the KPD said in its statement, adding that no other gunshot victims were known.

Employee Opens Fire in Texas Office Park
Cops said Bollin fled before they arrived, but authorities tracked him to the small town of Iola, about 20 miles to the northeast. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives sent dogs to the scene of the shooting, said spokesman Deon Washington.

As officers entered the restroom, the subject reportedly fired shots, striking an officer.

Eight people were slain at Atlanta-area spas, 10 people at a supermarket in Boulder, Colorado, and four people, including a 9-year-old boy, at a real estate office in the Southern California city of Orange.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee mentioned the shooting at a news conference but said he had little information.

Before making his announcement he addressed the breaking news of the shooting saying, "I just wanted to make reference to that and ask for those who are watching online or otherwise to pray for that situation and for the families and the victims that might be effected by that in our state".

Mr Lee backed the legislation over objections from law enforcement groups, who argued that the state's existing permit system provided an important safeguard for knowing who should or shouldn't be carrying a gun.
