He called him an "invaluable partner", and spoke of how he transformed the role of the vice president.

Mr Mondale served Minnesota as attorney-general and a U.S. senator, and followed the trail blazed by his political mentor, Hubert H Humphrey, to the vice-presidency, serving under Jimmy Carter from 1977 to 1981. "Through his work as a Senator, he showed me what was possible", Biden said in a statement. After serving as a senator, he was vice president from 1977 to 1981 under then president Jimmy Carter.

Mr Carter said he considered Mr Mondale the "best vice-president in our country's history". The pair lost their bid for a second term in office in 1980 but Mondale ran for president in 1984 and chose New York Rep. Geraldine Ferraro as his running mate, the first female running mate on a general election ticket.
