Navalny taken to hospital as fears for his life grow

Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny is currently on hunger strike in a penal colony east of Moscow with his doctors warning he could die

Both France and Germany on Sunday joined a growing global chorus of protest at Navalny's treatment.

His transfer to a separate institution "only means that Navalny's condition has worsened so much that even a torture farm has acknowledged it", he said.

European Union foreign ministers are set to meet virtually Monday for talks on the health of dissident Alexei Navalny, as the United States warned Moscow of "consequences" if the Kremlin critic dies in prison and tensions soared over a Russian military build-up on Ukraine's border.

The EU in October sanctioned six Russian officials over the Novichok nerve agent attack on Mr. Navalny, and in February sanctioned another four individuals over his arrest and sentencing. He and Western governments called this an attempted assassination.

Navalny went on hunger strike on March 31 to protest against what he said was the refusal of prison authorities to provide him with treatment for leg and back pain.

But Borrell said there were now no proposals for new sanctions against Russian Federation.

US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said on Sunday that Washington had told Moscow "there will be consequences" if Navalny dies in prison, but did not mention specifics. The Kremlin denies any blame.

Mr Navalny's allies and family - including his mother, wife and teenage daughter - took to social media over the weekend to plead the Kremlin to let a civilian doctor examine him.

Shooting in Kenosha leaves 3 dead, 2 wounded; suspect at large
It happened at 12:24 a.m.at the Somers House Tavern, located at 1548 Sheridan Road. Nonetheless, deputies said they have not found the suspect.

"The health of convicts in the Russia Federation can not and should not be a topic concerning them", said Mr. Putin's spokesman Dmitry Peskov.

Faced with the largest deployment of Russian troops on Ukraine's borders since 2014, President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested more help from the West.

The American ambassador to Russian Federation is returning to Washington for "consultations" after a new round of sanctions imposed on Moscow last week by President Biden, including the expulsion of 10 US diplomats - a move quickly followed by reciprocal measures from the Kremlin.

"I believe it is important for me to speak directly with my new colleagues in the Biden administration in Washington about the current state of bilateral relations between the United States and Russia", Sullivan, who was nominated by former President Donald Trump and took over as USA ambassador previous year, said. And Biden has said he is open to a one-on-one summit with the Russian leader.

Kiev has been battling Russian-backed separatists in eastern Ukraine since 2014 and clashes intensified early this year, effectively shredding a ceasefire agreed last July.

Moscow said Sunday it would expel a Ukrainian diplomat, prompting an immediate pledge of retaliation from Kiev. Two people were found dead at the depot after the initial blast.

Czech police said they were seeking two Russians in connection with the explosion and that the pair carried passports used by suspects in the poisoning of former Russian double agent Sergei Skripal in Britain in 2018. The Kremlin has denied any role.
