NBA Derek Chauvin George Floyd

Floyd's family members watched the verdicts together inside a home. "And now we have to make sure justice prevails in the sentencing".

Earlier today, former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin was found guilty of second-degree murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter in the killing of George Floyd a year ago.

"On behalf of all of Newark and our residents, we applaud the jury for its decision in the Derek Chauvin case and congratulate Minnesota's prosecutors for their work in bringing it about".

The jury of six white members and six Black or multiracial ones finished deliberations after about 10 hours over two days.

Chauvin will learn his fate in eight weeks, when Judge Peter Cahill hands down punishment to the former police officer who was found guilty on Tuesday of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter.

Manchester United legend Sir Alex Ferguson responds to European Super League proposals
It has been agreed the new-look Champions League will involve an initial phase where every club plays 10 matches each rather than the current group phase.

'This is the first step, ' Democratic Rep. Joyce Beatty, the head of the Congressional Black Caucus, said of the verdict. "Today we are able to breathe again", he said.

"While I feel like there is something to celebrate for George Floyd's family and community, and the fact that we finally have a guilty verdict, there is so many other instances where there isn't justice", local activist April Taylor said.

The legislation would prohibit choke holds and no-knock warrants at the federal level, limit them at the state and local level, and restrict the use of qualified immunity, a legal shield for police against civil suits.

After the verdict was read from the Minneapolis courthouse, cheers rose from the crowds that had gathered outside and down at the intersection of 38th and Chicago now known as George Floyd Square.

The former officer, who was handcuffed in the courtroom and taken to jail after the verdict, could now be sent to prison for decades. He, Jill Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris spoke to the Floyd family after the verdict was rendered.
