Indonesian Navy Loses Contact With Submarine; 53 Aboard

Indonesian Navy loses contact with submarine near Bali

Indonesia's military chief, Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, added that neighboring Singapore and Australia had been asked to provide assistance in locating the missing submarine, with ship tracking software showing the former's submarine rescue vessel MV Swift Rescue already sailing southwards towards Bali as of Wednesday afternoon local time.

The 44-year-old German-made submarine, KRI Nanggala-402, was conducting a torpedo drill in waters north of the island of Bali but failed to relay the results as expected, the navy said.

An aerial search found an oil spill near the submarine's dive location and two navy vessels with sonar capability have been deployed to assist the hunt, Indonesia's Defense Ministry said.

He said contact with the vessel was lost at 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday.

"We are still searching in the waters of Bali, 60 miles (96 km) from Bali, (for) 53 people", military chief Hadi Tjahjanto told Reuters in a text message.

The search is now being carried out by two Indonesian warships equipped with side-scan sonar, a tool used for mapping the seafloor, according to the Ministry of Defense.

Highest single day deaths of 1,761 in India, 2.59L cases
We have been demanding for one week to increase the oxygen supply quota to Delhi, which the Central government has to do. Over 13.01 crore vaccine doses have been administered since the mega inoculation drive against Covid began in January.

Fifty-three people are said to be on board the missing submarine, which may be at a depth of 700 metres, media reports say. There was no immediate information about why it went missing.

According to the source, the surface crew became increasingly anxious with each passing hour with contact until, according to Janes, a defense news outlet, the Indonesian armed forces sent out a distress call to the International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office at about 9:37 a.m. local time to report the submarine as missing with the presumption that it has sunk.

The KRI Nanggala-402 submarine stopped responding in the early morning defense officials said.

Both Type 209/1300 (Cakra-class) submarines of the Indonesian Navy, KRI Cakra and KRI Nanggala were built by Germany's Howaldtswerke-Deutsche Werft (HDW, TKMS) in 1981.

It plans to operate at least eight by 2024.
