Daily record of more than 893000 COVID cases globally

Oxygen- Delhi- COVID

The hospital said it would have to discharge patients if it did not get more oxygen.

Overwhelmed hospitals in India are begging for oxygen supplies as the country's coronavirus infections soared again overnight in a "tsunami" of disease, setting a new world record in cases for the third consecutive day.

The country has the second highest number of confirmed cases in the world with 16 million cases in a population of 1.4 billion people.

India's number of cases surged by 349,691 in the past 24 hours, the fourth straight day of record peaks, and hospitals in Delhi and across the country are turning away patients after running out of medical oxygen and beds. More than 130 Covid patients are on life support, it stressed.

The number of new daily infections has been above 300,000 over the last several days.

Hospitals in Delhi have warned they are at breaking point.

Hearing a petition on oxygen supply, the Delhi High Court on Saturday observed that it will "hang" whoever obstructs movement of oxygen.

He said the investigation still needs to be completed to determine if the actions of the officers were justified. Woods said the department must follow the OH law on public records before it can share the full video.

While empty cryogenic tnks have been airlifted and are in the process of being filled with liquid oxygen from Durgapur, the High Court was informed that Delhi government has not made arrangements for cryogenic tanks for supplies from Rourkela and Kalinganagar.

"We need to ensure that there are no non-essential activities taking place".

Additional medical oxygen has been trucked into the capital from industrial zones in eastern India. We will face a shortage of oxygen at night. But we have limitations and the biggest challenge right now is transporting it to where it's urgently needed.

The Press Trust of India news agency said the Defence Ministry would fly 23 mobile oxygen generating plants from Germany to help with the shortage.

And the devastating effect is evident in the images pouring in from crematoriums across the country - of anguished families waiting for hours to perform last rites, mass cremations as cities run out of space to honour the dead and incessant plumes of smoke from funeral pyres.

Earlier Moolchand hospital, in a tweet, appealed for urgent help from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Lt Governor Anil Baijal.

It quoted unidentified officials as saying "low pressure oxygen" could be the cause of their deaths.

"We direct all the suppliers to provide complete details of the oxygen that they supply in the NCT of Delhi of the hospitals to which they are supplied; the time at which they are supplied; and the quantities which they supply", the court ordered.
