Three Georgia men have been charged with federal hate crimes and attempted kidnapping in connection to the death of Ahmaud Arbery, a Black man who was killed in a shooting while jogging in his neighborhood previous year.

The DOJ has charged the two man and a third man, William "Roddie" Bryan, with attempted kidnapping and interference of civil rights.

Travis and Gregory McMichael are also additionally facing charges for using guns to carry out acts of violence. "No trial date has been set for the state case". They face state charges including murder, aggravated assault and false imprisonment.

The Justice Department brought federal hate crimes charges Wednesday in the death of Ahmaud Arbery, charging a father and son who armed themselves, chased and fatally shot the 25-year-old Black man after spotting him running in their Georgia neighborhood.

The indictment alleges that the three "used force and threats of force to intimidate and interfere with Arbery's right to use a public street because of his race", the Justice Department said in a statement.

Later, Gregory McMichael, a retired police officer, helped leak the video because he wanted "the public to know the truth", his attorney said in May.

"An avid runner, Ahmaud frequently jogged around his neighborhood and surroundings areas in Brunswick, Georgia, including Satilla Shores", Cooper's attorneys wrote in their complaint, before describing what made that day different. The men never faced hate crime charges in Georgia, though, because the state notably did not have a hate crime law until June 2020 - more than three months after Arbery's death. Bryan then joined the chase, eventually cutting off Arbery's route with his truck, prosecutors allege.

"There is absolutely nothing in the indictment that identifies how this is a federal hate crime and it ignores without apology that Georgia law allows a citizen to detain a person who was committing burglaries until police arrive", said attorneys Bob Rubin and Jason Sheffield, according to Reuters.

Surveillance video appeared to capture Arbery entering a property under construction before the shooting, but he didn't take anything from the house, his family's lawyers and the homeowner's attorney have said.

Bryan's attorney, Kevin Gough, told NPR that he is disappointed with the Justice Department's decision to pursue federal charges.
