Hinshaw announces new quarantine rules for Albertans who have been vaccinated

Alberta added 812 new cases of COVID-19 on Thursday while the number of patients in hospitals and intensive care units fell slightly. Provincial labs completed 10,130 tests on Thursday for a positivity rate of 7.4 per cent, the lowest rate since the end of March.

Up until now, anyone who has been a close contact of someone with COVID-19 will have to quarantine for 14 days, but effective immediately, those with a first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine will have their quarantine period shortened. They would no longer need to quarantine if their test is negative, but if it's positive, they must isolate for 10 days after their symptoms started.

Any returning travellers will still need to quarantine for two weeks, regardless of their vaccine status.

Including adjustments to previous days, Alberta has now administered 2,401,932 vaccine doses.

Active cases of COVID-19 also continue to drop.

That means 51 per cent of Albertans 12 and older are now protected with a least one dose. She reminded everyone to avoid having in-person contact with people outside their households and to avoid non-essential travel. "If we all stay vigilant and do our part, just one more time, this might be the last long weekend when such sacrifices are necessary".

"The weather is warming up, the sun is shining and summer is just around the corner", said Hinshaw.

NDP labour critic Christina Gray said Kenney's job creation effort was too-long delayed and too little to make up for the jobs lost before the pandemic.

AHS says there has not been a significant increase in appointment no-shows, and all 1,300 Alberta pharmacies participating in the vaccine rollout have been notified of the nefarious social media claims.

"AHS has systems in place to prevent double bookings through our online tool and Health Link 811".

Asked about the tweets Thursday, Hinshaw said she was aware of the report but not of the specifics surrounding the case.

She also said people who have had one shot can have their isolation time reduced.

"While vaccines don't erase all possibility of infection, the data shows the vaccine reduces the amount of virus in the person's body, even if someone does get infected, which further reduces the risk of transmission", said Dr. Deena Hinshaw.
