His parents, younger brother and two great-grandparents were among the dead, the ministry said, correcting an earlier statement that had included Eitan among the victims.

Sunday was a lovely, sunny day in the area, and Mr Milan said that many families were taking advantage of the weather to enjoy a day out after months of lockdown. "Rockets were falling in Israel; they thought, 'What can happen in Italy?'" she said.

The cable auto dropped near the summit of the Stresa-Mottarone line in the Piedmont region and was very high off the ground, Alpine rescue service spokesman Walter Milan said.

It's understood 15 people were inside the cable auto at the time of the horror incident.

The accident happened as the cable vehicle was traveling up the mountain, with the cabin dropping some 20 metres and rolling several times down the steep slopes before it was stopped by trees, Severino said.

Officials said two children, aged five and nine, were taken from the scene by helicopter to a Turin hospital.

Many still uncertain about AstraZeneca as their second dose
The WHO initially asked them to hold onto the vaccines until it could establish whether they could be still be used. As 55,000 of the remaining doses are set to expire at the end of May, pharmacies said they can respond quickly.

The child died after several attempts to restart his heart failed and "there was nothing more we could do", said hospital spokesman Pier Paolo Berra.

The funicular line is popular with tourists and locals alike to scale Mottarone, which reaches a height of 1,491 meters (4,900 feet) and overlooks several picturesque lakes and the surrounding Alps of Italy's Piedmont region.

In a separate interview with the Associated Press, Milan said that the cable line had been renovated in 2016 and had only recently reopened after coronavirus lockdowns forced the closures of ski lifts across Italy.

At least 13 people died and three were seriously injured on Sunday when a cable auto linking Italy's Lake Maggiore with a nearby mountain in the Alps plunged 20 metres to the ground, local officials and rescuers said.

The mountain hosts a small amusement park, Alpyland, that has a children's rollercoaster, and the area also has mountain bike paths and hiking trails.

Italy's transport minister, Enrico Giovannini, was following the rescue effort, which involved the deployment of three helicopters to the mountainside.
