NY prosecutors probing Trump form grand jury

Washington Post: Manhattan DA convenes grand jury to consider potential charges in Trump Organization probe

The Manhattan District Attorney's Office has reportedly convened a grand jury to decide whether an indictment is warranted against former President Donald Trump.

Trump has previously called the district attorney's investigation a "witch hunt". He said this likely explains why the DA has reportedly set a six-month session for the impaneling, which is longer than regular grand jury assignments in NY. While working on the case, it will also hear other things.

Citing two anonymous sources, the Post reported that Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance's (D) office convened the grand jury "recently", and it is expected to sit three days a week for six months.

Vence spokesman Danny Frost declined to comment on the post report.

"Now he will present that info to the grand jury and try to persuade the members to indict, so that he can formally charge the defendants and move the case forward", Tobias said.

Such juries are made up of citizens who examine the evidence in secret before deciding whether to pursue charges.

Vance and NY state Attorney General Letitia James, both Democrats, are investigating Trump's business dealings ― prompting the Republican to claim he is being persecuted.

"This is purely political, and an affront to the nearly 75 million voters who supported me in the Presidential Election, and it's being driven by highly partisan Democrat prosecutors", Trump closed.

Manhattan's DACy Vance has begun investigating Trump's business practices based on the testimony of former President Michael Cohen's parliamentary lawyer and fixer.

Both offices have said in court papers that they are investigating Trump, his company and business associates over their alleged habit of artificially inflating and deflating the value of assets to secure bank loans, tax breaks and other financial benefits.

The DA's investigation is being carried out alongside the office New York Attorney General Letitia James, which revealed last week that the investigation into the Trump Organization was being conducted "in a criminal capacity".

Trump responded to the report in a statement Tuesday evening.

Vance, who leaves his post at the end of December, acquired eight years of Trump's tax returns in February after a years-long legal battle that went to the Supreme Court.

She's given investigators reams of tax records and other documents as they look into whether some Trump employees were given off-the-books compensation, such as apartments or school tuition.

Vance's investigation has appeared to focus in recent weeks on Trump's longtime finance chief, Allen Weisselberg.
