Emergency responders gather at the scene of a shooting where several people were reported dead including the shooter

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that the suspect, who was employed by Santa Clara's Valley Transportation Authority (VTA), took his own life before law enforcement officials were able to react to the scene. Smith said there's no information to connect another suspect to the fire.

California Governor Gavin Newsom said at a Wednesday afternoon news conference that the massacre was a symptom of a larger American problem.

"We heard that he chose the people to shoot, but I don't know why they choose him because he has nothing to do with him", he said.

Authorities did not release the gunman's name or age.

President Biden called the shooting a "horrible tragedy" and ordered him to raise a half-mast to honor the victims.

A house fire reported minutes after the shooting is also believed to be linked to the suspect, sources told ABC News.
