Biden orders inquiry into origins of COVID-19

WHO scientists likely to reconsider China lab origin theory of Covid-19

"We are not saying that a lab origin is more likely than a natural one, but only that in a situation where a very unlikely event indeed has occurred, the worst pandemic in a century, we should investigate causes that seem unlikely as well as those that, to some, seem more likely". The claims that the virus came from the lab was one often pushed by former President Donald Trump, though he never provided evidence.

U.S. President Joe Biden announced on Wednesday that he has asked American intelligence agencies to "redouble" their efforts to analyse the origins of COVID-19, to determine whether it emerged from human-animal contact or via a laboratory accident. ABC News has not independently confirmed that intelligence report.

"I have now asked the intelligence community to redouble their efforts to collect and analyse information that could bring us closer to a definitive conclusion, and to report back to me in 90 days", Mr. Biden said in a statement, adding he had asked that specific questions for China be drawn up with input from USA national labs.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that US intelligence indicates three researchers from the lab, which studies bat coronaviruses and their potential to infect humans, became sick enough in November 2019 to seek hospital care. He has asked for a new report to be filed in 90 days looking further into the origins of the virus that has killed at least 590,000 Americans and almost 3.5 million people worldwide.

A joint China-WHO study published in March said that it was highly improbable that SARS-CoV-2 leaked from the lab, adding that it most likely spread from bats to humans via an as yet unidentified intermediary species.

Coronavirus | Vaccine highly effective in adolescents: Moderna
Since the COVID-19 vaccine rollouts started late previous year , the shots have brought in billions for the leading companies. The US had started procuring vaccines right from their trial stages and today, it has enough doses for each of its citizens.

After the report was released, however, World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus insisted all theories remained on the table.

Facebook in a separate statement said it was stepping up its efforts to curb misinformation by limiting the reach of users who "repeatedly" share false content.

"We hope the USA could cooperate with the WHO to conduct a comprehensive, transparent and evidence-based investigation to respond to concerns from the global community and to contribute to the handling of public health emergencies in the future", said the spokesperson. The two exceptions have been around elections and COVID-19.

"To politicize origin tracing, a matter of science, will not only make it hard to find the origin of the virus, but give free rein to the "political virus" and seriously hamper worldwide cooperation on the pandemic", the Chinese Embassy said late Wednesday.

"Open up Fort Detrick military base as early as possible, and all the bio labs the USA has around the world", he said, referring to a United States research facility in Maryland.
