Biden's ATF nominee Chipman confronts disinformation in Senate hearing

David Chipman

Gun rights advocates, including the National Rifle Association, have blasted the pick, calling Chipman an "extremist". "Americans likewise have the Second Amendment to protect their God-given rights to keep and bear arms", Knudsen and the attorneys general wrote.

If confirmed, Chipman would return to the agency where he worked for over two decades as a special agent.

Gun control proponents are already making a full court press for senators to approve Chipman for the post.

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) pressed Chipman on his public support for an AR-15 ban.

Sen. Mike Lee (R-Utah) questioned Chipman about his "aggressive" and "reckless" opposition to legislation Lee had introduced to make it easier to buy gun silencers. Lee also brought up an interview Chipman did last April about a rise in gun sales during which Chipman appeared to mock first-time gun owners. Whitehouse asked you if your any of views on guns are out of step with the majority of the American people. "How does this reflect the careful, measured judgment of one who would be in charge of enforcing our nation's gun laws?"

Belarus isolation grows as Europe cuts air links over diverted plane
President Joe Biden applauded European Union sanctions and said he ordered his administration to hold Belarus accountable. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said the video made for "distressing viewing" and Belarus would face consequences.

ATF agents play an important role in upholding the public safety of communities around the country and will be disserved by an agency director with a political agenda.

Chipman works as a policy adviser for Giffords, a gun control advocacy group founded by former U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords and her husband Senator Mark Kelly after a gunman shot and wounded her in 2011. "The job of the ATF director is to enforce the laws that Congress passes ... not to promote failed gun policies".

Almost 70 House Republicans have warned their Senate colleagues to oppose Chipman's nomination, describing him as an "enemy of the Second Amendment". Shortly after the White House nominated Chipman, Republicans noted the anti-gun lobbyist's track record, including working for gun control group Giffords and advocating for bans and regulations on assault rifles, suppressors, bump stocks, certain ammunition, and homemade firearms.

It is critical that David Chipman's nomination to be Director of ATF is defeated.

"After declaring the Bill of Rights not "absolute" and pushing for "Red Flag" gun confiscation, President Biden has appointed David Chipman, a career government agent whose history has been stained by the blood of American citizens, to lead the ATF", Young Americans for Liberty (YAL) Senior spokesperson Eric Brakey said in a statement on Tuesday.
