B.C. reports fewer than 200 new COVID-19 cases, no deaths

Government data shows B.C.'s efforts to slow the spread of COVID-19 in the province are having an effect.

Health officials overnight recorded the lowest number of new infections since October 20, 32 weeks ago: 184. No new COVID-related deaths were reported.

There are also 34 people in ICU with Covid-19 and a further 89 people in hospital with the virus.

Long-term care homes have seen some rapid transmission of the virus because not all residents have received a second shot and neither have visitors, so restrictions can not be fully lifted in the facilities where people are in close contact, Henry says.

"This latest guidance will help inform the approach we take here in B.C. for those who received the AstraZeneca COVISHIELD vaccine".

There are now 102 active cases of COVID-19 in the Vancouver Island region, including seven people in hospital and one more in critical care. "New strains are circulating and outbreaks are still occurring in schools, in hospitals, in long-term care and in our communities", Henry said. The province has not provided that many second doses in a single day since February 22, when 18,134 second doses were administered.

Within Interior Health, there are 421 active cases of COVID-19, a decrease of 21 from Monday.

She again urged everyone to ensure they are registered to receive their doses.

As of Tuesday, health officials said just over 70 per cent of B.C. adults and 67 per cent of those 12 and older have received at least one dose of vaccine.

Henry said that 139,562 individuals who tested positive have now recovered, and to date, 3,250,116 doses of COVID-19 vaccine have been delivered, 179,954 of which are second doses.

Bonnie Henry's plea for caution came as she announced that another 708 cases of the novel coronavirus were confirmed over the weekend in B.C. and 11 more people had died.
