Iranian Warship Sinks in Gulf of Oman

Iran naval ship sinks off Jask Port

But efforts to save the ship itself were unsuccessful and it sank, according to Fars news agency. State media reported 400 sailors and trainee cadets on board fled the vessel, with 33 suffering injuries.

The head of public relations of the 1st Navy District of the Army said that the fire of Khark ship had started from the engine house and the forces were transported to the shore from the accident site by tow and helicopter.

Satellite photos from Planet Labs Inc. analyzed by The Associated Press showed the Kharg off to the west of Jask on Tuesday. Photos and videos shared online show the entire ship out at sea engulfed in thick black smoke. Iranian officials did not offer any explanation for the fire. Other explosions on ships in the Gulf of Oman since 2019 are believed to be part of the shadow war between Iran and Israel, each accusing the other of attacking ships with limpet mines.

The Kharg was Iran's largest warship.

The shipping incidents have occurred since U.S. President Joe Biden took office in January, pledging to rejoin Iran's 2015 nuclear containment deal with six world powers - abandoned by his predecessor Donald Trump in a move welcomed by Israel - if Tehran returns to full compliance with the accord. Negotiations on saving the accord continue in Vienna.

And Israel sees Iran's nuclear program as a threat to its existence.

The Israeli prime minister's office did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday regarding the Kharg.

California launched a $116.5 million lottery on Thursday to incentivize state residents to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Maryland drew a victor for its first $40,000 vaccine lottery prize Tuesday, kicking off 40 days of drawings.

Kharg had been on a "training, intelligence and combat mission" in worldwide waters along with Alborz, an Alvand-class frigate, according to a statement from the naval force of the regular Iranian army May 9.

Iran has refused to recognise Israel since its Islamic Revolution in 1979 that toppled the US -backed Shah.

Iran's biggest navy warship sank on Wednesday (June 2).

"It is not the IRIN's largest vessel any more after they commissioned Makran, a converted oil tanker, in January", he added. "That allowed them to conduct operations far afield".

The Kharg had been in service for more than 40 years.

The sinking of the Kharg marks the latest naval disaster for Iran. In 2020, during an Iranian military training exercise, a missile mistakenly struck a naval vessel near Jask, killing 19 sailors and wounding 15.

Gambrell reported from Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
