Kamala Harris visits Guatemala, country's president blames Biden admin. for border crisis

Kamala Harris, Speaking in Guatemala, Warns Against Making 'Dangerous Trek' to U.S. Border: 'Do Not Come. Do Not Come.'

Speaking in Guatemala City, Harris said her trip and President Joe Biden's first trip overseas later this week are reflections of their administration's intention to rebuild relationships with allies.

"The United States will continue to enforce our laws and secure our borders..." Her comments come as Republican critics have tried to make Harris the face of the Biden administration's response at the border, where a record number of unaccompanied children crossed into the USA this spring.

American officials have in recent days called on Central American countries to defend democracy and fight corruption in a bid to improve conditions at home and thus eliminate a driving factor for migration.

"I am against her stepping over the sovereignty of the Guatemalan...most of all to bring an anti-corruption agenda, where they protect good but corrupt people, where she has met with convicts in the United States", stated Jorge Lemus, former captain of infantry for the Guatemalan Army.

On the immigration front he announced a new processing center for migrants sent back from Mexico and the United States, which could increase capacity.

"There is not going to be a quick fix", she said.

Two Dead, Over 20 People Injured in Miami-Dade Mass Shooting
A father told WSVN that his 19-year-old daughter was injured in the shooting and that she was in surgery at Jackson Memorial. There were more than 43,000 gun-related deaths in the country a year ago , according to the Gun Violence Archive .

"I'm just focused on that kind of work as opposed to grand gestures", she said.

During an interview with Fox Business on Monday, Trump blasted the fact no officials have visited the Mexico border since Biden took over - despite him tipping Vice President Kamala Harris as "border czar" months ago. There are legal methods by which migration can and should occur. She confirmed that the United States would supply half a million COVID-19 doses to Guatemala. "We can't help set someone's house on fire and then blame them for fleeing". "It must be coupled with tangible outcomes, in terms of what we do as leaders to convince people that there is a reason to be hopeful about their future and the future of their children".

More recently, the USA -financed, U.N. Commission Against Impunity in Guatemala helped bring down democratically elected conservative President Otto Perez Molina, a former general, who resigned after massive protests triggered by an investigation into corruption in his government.

The group will complement the efforts to build cases against corrupt actors in the region, the statement said.

However, Washington's push to tackle "root causes" of migration in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras have been undermined by a backlash against anti-corruption bodies the United States considers independent but that local elites say are biased. In Guatemala, the vice president met Guatemalan community leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs and greeted and thanked USA embassy staff.
