"America is back": Brussels upbeat on eve of Biden’s Europe trip

Biden speaks with Ukrainian president ahead of U.S.-Russia summit

Mr Biden also said he would rally democracies in an ideological and economic struggle against China and face down provocations from Russian Federation as he left Washington on his first overseas trip as president.

U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said at a White House briefing that Biden told Zelensky that he "looks forward to welcoming him to the White House here in Washington this summer".

On the sidelines of a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels on June 14, Biden is also expected to meet with Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, a crucial session between the sparring North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies after Ankara's purchase of Russian defense systems angered Washington and risked driving a wedge within the alliance.

Michel said the idea that "multilateralism is back" was more than a slogan, it was a recognition that a global approach is needed to resolve issues, whether they be supply chains for Covid-19 vaccines or fairer corporate taxes in the digital age.

Biden will also press Putin about saber-rattling on the Ukrainian border, the imprisonment of opponent Alexei Navalny, and his support for Alexander Lukashenko, the Belarussian strongman who forced a Ryanair airliner to land in Minsk, then arrested an opponent on the flight.

A man joggs by the "Villa La Grange", possible venue of the meeting between US President Joe Biden and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in Geneva on June 8, 2021.

The EU and Russian Federation disagree on a wide range of issues including human rights, Russia's intervention in Ukraine and Moscow's treatment of jailed Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, and Michel said that relations between them had reached a low point. Discussions are expected to focus on relations with China and Russian Federation, as well as the US troop withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Travel restrictions still in place for those wanting to travel to Canada
Trudeau has mentioned a 75% vaccination rate as a key threshold when asked about potentially reopening the border. Doing so, they said, "would sustain jobs, boost business confidence and allow more families to reunite".

Biden will depart for Europe on Wednesday and be making his first stop across the pond in the United Kingdom. Biden and the other G-7 leaders will announce an infrastructure financing program for developing countries that is meant to compete directly with Beijing's Belt-and-Road Initiative.

As a presidential candidate, Biden had criticized Trump's withdrawal as "short-sighted". The world leaders are expected to endorse the plan, though it's already facing opposition from Republicans in the United States. Sullivan told reporters Biden will also "reinforce the importance of burden-sharing".

The European Union is hoping its summit with the USA will bring an end to trade disputes.

But Press Secretary Jen Psaki said that with decades in the Senate and eight years as vice president under Barack Obama, Biden has done his homework. "Joe Biden is not meeting with Vladimir Putin despite our countries' differences; he's meeting with him because of our countries' differences".

"There is simply a lot we have to work through", he said.

When asked if he would reach an agreement with Putin on cyberattacks, Biden did not make any commitments.
