Danish midfielder Christian Eriksen stable after collapsing in Euro 2020 game

Denmark's Christian Eriksen collapses, given CPR on field during Euro 2020 match vs. Finland

Denmark midfielder Christian Eriksen is stable in hospital after collapsing during his country's opening Euro 2020 game against Finland in Copenhagen.

Both teams subsequently left the field with officials holding up sheets to hide the stricken player from view, and the stadium announcer told fans that the game had been suspended due to a medical emergency and to stay in their seats.

UEFA has confirmed that the player has been transferred to the hospital and has been stabilised.

Information from the Associated Press was used in this report.

The 29-year-old came up through Ajax's academy before going on to become a star for the Dutch giants.

When players returned to the field over an hour later to warm up, some Danish players appeared to still be struggling emotionally.

9 new COVID-19 cases in Island Health after several low days
Getting back into our communities, getting back to work and getting back to our meaningful social connections that sustain us. The number of people battling COVID-19 in hospital increased slightly on Tuesday to 203, with 57 patients in intensive care.

Medics ran onto the field to help the Internazionale midfielder as he lay stricken on the ground. "But we still don't know anything yet".

The distressing scenes were echoed by the distraught faces of the Denmark players who formed a barrier around their team-mate to give him some privacy. "We heard what UEFA said and we're all happy that he's been stabilized".

Volpi says Eriksen never contracted COVID-19, has no medical conditions that he's aware of and has passed every medical exam without problem since joining Inter in January 2020 from Tottenham. The Danish FA also confirmed that Eriksen was awake and undergoing further tests.

Eriksen was eventually carried off to a loud ovation, with his teammates walking next to the stretcher. Halftime was shortened to five minutes before play resumed again, as did Denmark's dominance of the match. Some supporters could be seen crying and hugging in the stands.

During the delay, fans of both teams chanted Eriksen's name.
