Two of the victims are in critical condition, while the other 12 are stable, interim Austin Police Chief Joseph Chacon said Saturday, adding that nearly all of them were innocent bystanders.

Gunfire erupted just before 1:30am along 6th Street while it was still heaving with drinkers, who sprinted into bars and restaurants in an attempt to flee. They believe it was an isolated incident but could not rule out the male suspect posing a further risk to the public.

Eleven of the wounded were taken to one local hospital and the other two were taken to other hospitals, the chief said.

Police say the suspect is still at large.

French President Emmanuel Macron slapped by member of public
It is not the first time that Mr Macron has been attacked by angry crowd members while out in public. He is widely expected to run for re-election in France's presidential elections in 2021.

"And because of the nature of the injuries, officers had to go ahead and use their police vehicles to put some of these shooting victims into their vehicles and transport them themselves".

The interim chief said "almost all" of the shooting victims appear to be innocent bystanders.

APD officers have been reviewing footage of the incident from multiple sources for additional information; aggravated assault and homicide unit detectives had already begun investigating the incident along with organized crime and gang units, Chacon said.

Police officers were on the block and able to respond to the shooting within seconds, immediately starting life-saving measures such as applying tourniquets and other first aid.

"There was a large crowd of people that were there at that time", Chacon said.

Austin Mayor Steve Adler said in a statement, "The uptick in gun violence locally is part of a disturbing rise in gun violence across the country ..."

Councilmember Ann Kitchen also said, "there's no place for guns on our streets, as we reopen our city".
