Rep. Omar's Remarks Cause Uproar Among Democrats

Group of House Dems accuse Omar of comparing U.S. and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban

Twelve Jewish House Democrats have penned a letter to Rep.Ilhan Omar seeking clarification for remarks she made that compared Israel and the United States to Hamas.

The recent statements of Mrs. Ilhan Omar, a member of the US House of Representatives, in which she equated the victim with the executioner, are very surprising, as she equated the resistance of the Palestinian people on the one hand, and the crimes of the Israeli occupation in Palestine and the American aggression in Afghanistan on the other. "Rep. Omar should be removed from [the House Foreign Affairs Committee] and some".

She added: "So in both of these cases, if domestic courts won't or can't pursue justice and we oppose the ICC, where do you think the victims of these supposed crimes can go for justice?"

We appreciate Mrs. Ilhan Omar's stances in defending justice and the rights of the oppressed around the world, foremost of which are the just rights of our Palestinian people, but we deplore this unfair combination that is contrary to justice and global law.

The Minnesota Democrat found herself in hot water this week after she lumped together the United States, Israel, Afghanistan, Hamas, and the Taliban as countries and organizations guilty of committing "unthinkable atrocities".

"Legitimate criticism of the policies of both the United States and Israel is protected by the values of free speech and democratic debate", they said. "And indeed, such criticism is essential to the strength and health of our democracies", the statement read.

"But drawing false equivalencies between democracies like the USA and Israel and groups that engage in terrorism like Hamas and the Taliban foments prejudice and undermines progress toward a future of peace and security for all".

The statement from the dozen Democratic lawmakers was signed by Rep. Brad Schneider of IL along with Reps. Brad Schneider, Jake Auchincloss, Ted Deutch, Lois Frankel, Josh Gottheimer, Elaine Luria, Kathy Manning, Jerrold Nadler, Dean Phillips, Kim Schrier, Brad Sherman, and Debbie Wasserman Schultz.

Pavlich went on to note that while she has the support of other progressive House members, many fellow Democrats, including Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA), have condemned the remark.

"It's shameful for colleagues who call me when they need my support to now put out a statement asking for "clarification" and not just call", Omar tweeted.

Travel restrictions still in place for those wanting to travel to Canada
Trudeau has mentioned a 75% vaccination rate as a key threshold when asked about potentially reopening the border. Doing so, they said, "would sustain jobs, boost business confidence and allow more families to reunite".

What "Islamophobic tropes" are those?

The tweet included video of a question she asked Secretary of State Anthony Blinken. This is unacceptable, especially for a U.S. Member of Congress.

"Equating the United States and Israel to Hamas and the Taliban is as offensive as it is misguided", says the joint statement.

Omar later clarified her remarks.

A House Democratic aide familiar with the back-and-forth said Ms. Omar's anger stemmed from her treatment by the dozen colleagues who publicly upbraided her.

Jeremy Slevin, Omar's spokesperson, said Tuesday following the initial GOP criticism "as usual, the far right is ginning up hate against Rep. Omar for a technical question about an ongoing investigation".

Representative Ilhan Omar is again at odds with her Democratic colleagues over Israel, but this time, she has brought her own country into the mix. "We have seen unthinkable atrocities committed by the US, Hamas, Israel, Afghanistan, and the Taliban".

In 2018, Tlaib and Omar became the first Muslim women elected to Congress.

"I am exhausted of colleagues (both D+R) demonizing @IlhanMN". In 2019, her Twitter comment that support in Washington for Israel was "all about the Benjamins baby" kicked off weeks of fighting that ended in a resolution on the House floor condemning bigotry and anti-Semitism. She has the courage to call out human rights abuses no matter who is responsible.

Rep. Cori Bush, a Democratic freshman from Missouri, also criticized those Democrats who issued the statement rather than talk directly to Omar.
