Elorza Makes Juneteenth Paid Holiday for City of Providence Employees

Sponsored by Markey and cosponsored by a bipartisan group of 60 senators, the legislation passed the Senate on Tuesday by unanimous consent, meaning no lawmaker objected to its approval.

The holiday is celebrated on June 19, and it began in 1865 when enslaved people in Texas learned they had been freed under the Emancipation Proclamation.

This year, the bill gained more Republican support and Johnson dropped his objections.

The Senate voted unanimously on Tuesday to pass legislation that would make June 19th, known as Juneteenth, a national holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the US. No other senator objected, including Sen. Ron Johnson, R-Wis., said he would drop his objection to the measure.

"Last year, a bill was introduced to celebrate Juneteenth by providing an additional paid holiday for 2 million federal employees at a cost of $600 million per year", Johnson said in the statement.

"It has been a state holiday in Texas for more than 40 years", Cornyn tweeted Tuesday afternoon. "Now more than ever, we need to learn from our history and continue to form a more flawless union".

Hancock gives clearest sign yet June 21 could be delayed
But people who have received two doses of vaccine, should be equally protected against either variant, he added. If you think you have the virus, don't go to the GP or hospital, stay indoors and get advice online .

Juneteenth is a holiday celebrating the emancipation of those who had been enslaved in the United States.

Federal lawmakers' efforts to make Juneteenth a federal holiday gained significantly more momentum past year amid the nationwide protests following George Floyd's murder by a Minneapolis police officer. A companion House bill proposed by Democratic Representative Sheila Jackson Lee garnered Republican co-sponsorship as well. Today, cities and towns across the country mark the date with festivals, parades, barbecues and educational events.

"Juneteenth would not be possible if it were not for the courage and determination of former slaves who relentlessly fought for their freedom and dignity".

Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza has officially declared Juneteenth an official paid holiday for city employees. "It's an opportunity for folks to kind of catch their breath about what has been this incredible pace of change and shifting that we've seen".

"Making Juneteenth a federal holiday is a major step forward to recognize the wrongs of the past", said Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y.
