US, Canada set to discuss lifting of border restrictions

USA and Canadian business leaders have voiced increasing concern about the ban on non-essential travel in light of COVID-19 that was first imposed in March 2020 and renewed on a monthly basis since then.

Ottawa has said the policy, along with its slate of other border measures, has been effective at limiting COVID-19 from entering the country, even though provinces have spent most of the spring battling a variant-driven deadly third wave of the pandemic. Canadian companies, especially those that rely on airlines and tourism, are urging the Liberal government to relax.

Speaking on Tuesday, LeBlanc says while health information falls under provincial jurisdiction, Ottawa's goal is to provide Canadians with a document to verify vaccinations against the coronavirus if they want to travel outside Canada.

Trudeau's overnight stay in a hotel came after his Liberal government had spent months defending the policy of forcing most Canadians returning from worldwide travel to quarantine in a hotel room for up to three days at their own expense.

Getting back into our communities, getting back to work and getting back to our meaningful social connections that sustain us. The number of people battling COVID-19 in hospital increased slightly on Tuesday to 203, with 57 patients in intensive care.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on Sunday he has spoken with US President Joe Biden about how to lift the restrictions, but made clear no breakthrough has been achieved.

The government took a cautious first step last week when it announced that Canadian citizens and permanent residents who have received two vaccine doses and who test negative for COVID-19 will likely be exempt from two weeks' self-isolation, including hotel quarantines, starting early next month. Canada is resisting calls for easing border measures, saying more people need to be vaccinated.

"Many countries like Canada continue to say that it's not time to travel", Trudeau added, but he said it was important to get back to normal as soon as possible. Therefore Fusion Media doesn't bear any responsibility for any trading losses you might incur as a result of using this data.
