Tropical depression Claudette continues with heavy rain in southeast region, NHC says

Tropical storm warnings for the Gulf Coast

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Forecasters warned of life-threatening flash flooding in parts of the Deep South, particularly across central Alabama, as Tropical Depression Claudette traveled over coastal states early Sunday.

Nine children and one adult were killed in an accident on Interstate 65 in Butler County, Alabama, on Saturday, according to Butler County Coroner Wayne Garlock.

According to Butler County Sheriff Danny Bond, multiple people were also injured, however, the number is unclear.

A 24-year-old man and three-year-old boy were also killed in Alabama on Saturday when a tree fell on their house, just outside the city of Tuscaloosa.

Heavy rains caused high water levels in the metropolitan areas of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa from late Saturday to early Sunday.

With Tropical Storm Claudette expected to move over eastern North Carolina Sunday evening into Monday morning, a tropical storm watch is in effect for Dare County.

Much of the North Carolina coast, from Little River Inlet to Duck, including Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds, is under a tropical storm warning, according to the NHC. The National Hurricane Center said in a Saturday night recommendation that it was moving northeast at 14 miles per hour (22 km). "Tropical storm conditions are possible in northeastern SC tonight and Monday, where a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect".

UK, Australia agree post-Brexit free trade deal
Cabinet Office minister Michael Gove said Australian beef imports would be a "pretty small" portion of U.K. consumption. The UK hopes to conclude more trade deals in the Asia Pacific region.

Shortly after landing, suspected tornadoes caused by a storm destroyed or severely damaged at least 50 homes in a small town in Alabama, just north of the Florida border. Most of the damage occurred in or near the towns of Bruton and East Bruton, about 48 miles north of Pensacola.

The system was located about 25 miles (35 kilometers) west of Atlanta.

"It was kind of influenced", Jackson said. "But with those mobile homes being built so close together it can take a toll on them a lot more than it can on houses that are spread apart".

The storm also rained floods north of Lake Pontchartrain, Louisiana, and along the MS coast, flooding the streets and, in some areas, pushing water into homes.

Along the coast, Claudette produced a storm surge of two to three feet above normally dry land from southeastern Louisiana to the Florida Panhandle, resulting in areas of inundation.

After the Gulf storm made landfall, it weakened into a tropical depression Saturday, but downpours still hammered the region. As of Sunday morning, it had dissipated over Mexico.

Over the weekend, heavy rainfall of up to 15 inches was expected in the southwestern and western coastal areas of Mexico. Forecasters were warning of the potential for flash flooding and mudslides.
