US announces plans to allocate 55 million doses to be shared globally

The US is donating vaccines to several countries

The White House will be announcing which vaccines will go to which country once they are shipped out.

The doses, the White House said, should be prioritized for "those most at risk, such as health care workers, should be prioritized, based on national vaccine plans".

The 55 million doses will be taken from the USA supply of Pfizer Inc, Moderna Inc, and Johnson & Johnson shots, though if AstraZeneca's vaccine gets a green light from the Food and Drug Administration, it would likely be added to the mix as well.

Some poorer countries were running out of coronavirus vaccines.

To address this, he said his government was working with Covax to create a regional hub to produce more vaccines in South Africa.

Islamabad has received about 100,000 Pfizer-BioNTech shots through the Covax initiative for equitable vaccine distribution, but it has otherwise relied largely on Chinese brands like Sinopharm and Sinovac.

COVID-19: Second dose of AstraZeneca vaccine no longer recommended in Canada
Instead of the 300 million doses Europe sought by the end of September, the court ordered AstraZeneca to ship 80.2 million doses. The donation won't cost Canada anything, and will be on top of the 44 million doses Canada has purchased directly from Moderna.

Mr. Biden has a week and a half to meet his deadline, a task made more hard as the administration tries to change which manufacturers' vaccines would be included in the 55 million portion. Production problems at an Emergent BioSolutions factory in Baltimore have forced the administration to revise its initial plan to rely heavily on AstraZeneca's vaccine for that donation. "But in reality it's probably much higher", Dr Aylward said.

The administration of US President Joe Biden on Monday announced its plan for the next tranche of 55 million Covid vaccine doses it plans to send to countries in need.

The United States has come under pressure to share more of its vaccine supply with countries that are still struggling with the deadly virus and its variants.

"The specific vaccines and amounts will be determined and shared as the administration works through the logistical, regulatory and other parameters particular to each region and country".

Of those, 41 million would be distributed through Covax, with the remaining 14 million shared with countries deemed to be priorities. The president sketched out his priorities for the first 25 million doses from that pledge earlier this month.

Together, those G7 members committed to donate one billion vaccines to poorer countries over this year. With more and more Americans getting the shots, the White House increasingly has turned its attention to getting vaccine out internationally.
