John McAfee: Anti-virus creator found dead in prison cell

McAfee who is wanted for questioning in Belize over the murder of a neighbor told Reuters on Wednesday that he has boarded

Anti-virus software entrepreneur John McAfee has been found dead in a Barcelona prison cell, just hours after a Spanish court agreed to extradite him to the U.S. to face tax evasion charges.

Spanish authorities arrested McAfee at Barcelona airport in October 2020 following an indictment from U.S. federal prosecutors on allegations of fraud and money laundering, as well as tax evasion charges linked to his failed bid to run as the Libertarian Party candidate in the 2020 USA presidential election. He was seventy five years old and was arrested at El Prat Airport in Barcelona October last year.

Two leading Spanish outlets, El Mundo and El Pais reported that the U.S. entrepreneur has been found dead in his prison cell in Barcelona. Though the cause of death has not been officially confirmed, multiple reports have cited possible suicide.

"There is much sorrow in prison, disguised as hostility", McAfee recently wrote on his Twitter account.

The entrepreneur was arrested last October at Barcelona's worldwide airport.

Tropical depression Claudette continues with heavy rain in southeast region, NHC says
Heavy rains caused high water levels in the metropolitan areas of Birmingham and Tuscaloosa from late Saturday to early Sunday. After the Gulf storm made landfall, it weakened into a tropical depression Saturday, but downpours still hammered the region.

McAfee still had opportunities to appeal his conviction but could not stand more time in jail, the lawyer Javier Villalba said.

He twice ran long-shot bids for US president and was a participant in Libertarian Party presidential debates in 2016.

Tennessee prosecutors charged McAfee with evading taxes after failing to report income made from promoting cryptocurrencies while he did consultancy work - as well as income from speaking engagements and selling the rights to his life story for a documentary.

He faced a possible sentence of more than two decades in prison had be been convicted of the USA tax charges, which stemmed from claims that he did not file tax returns between 2014 and 2018.

"These eight months John has spent in prison in Spain have been especially hard on his overall health both mentally and physically, as well as financially, but he is undeterred from continuing to speak truth to power", it said.
